ABOUT THIS SITE...

This website was developed as an extension of our California Library Association 2016 poster session, therefore many shared external resources are geared toward a California online  library grad student, but much of the  information provided  can be applied to students accessing the site from other states, and those focusing on different professions may also find this website helpful in their networking endeavors.

I’m a 2016 graduate of San Jose State University, School of Information. During graduate school I lived in a very rural town in Central California that lacked direct access to a freeway or even a Target. Despite being in a small town, and going to online graduate school, I made it a goal to find different ways to connect with other students and library professionals.

I am formally the student social media assistant to SJSU, School of Information and was responsible for posting content on their Twitter, Facebook, and Pinterest accounts. I picked up a lot along the way, both as a student and student assistant, and have a desire to help guide students in building their own community in an online library program. I am now work for two California community college districts as an adjunct librarian.

I am a current SJSU MLIS student, set to graduate this December! I have always been very motivated when it comes to my education, but going to school online had me really feeling isolated and disconnected. I joined a few Facebook groups though, and started going to a few meet ups and starting meeting fellow students. Attending last year's CLA conference made the  biggest impact in my networking, and it is all thanks to Student groups.

Going to school online doesn't mean that you have to go to school alone! Learning to network is something that is always talked about AFTER your graduate, but I think there's no reason to start building the skills for networking before you graduate.
